Last night’s episode of Being Mary Jane dumped a bucket of ice cold water on the characters, jarring them into reality. It all starts off so romantically as Andre and MJ enjoy each other’s company over a candlelit dinner. But then Andre confronts MJ about her nostalgic moment with David at the gala: “Are you screwing him? Am I his replacement?” He throws it in her face that he is breaking apart his life to be with her and she tells him that his sucky marriage should really be the impetus for that, not her.

The schmaltz was laid on really, really thick last night folks. “I deserve  better than this. I was raised better than this!” Mary Jane wails after getting caught by her brother going to (down) town on Andre in the opening scene. (I know I wasn’t the only one expecting the head in Andre’s lap to be that of his  wife Avery.)

The drama of this scene takes a Tyler Perry turn as Mary Jane turns into a doe-eyed damsel in distress as quickly as she snapped. She reprimands Andre for not fixing the floodlights in her pool, so he gets all Prince Charming on her and dives into the deep end fully-clothed to fix them. “Anything else you want me to do?” was all Mary Jane needs to hear to turn on her bedroom eyes and go slack-jawed as Andre proceeds to reciprocate their oral exchange.

Maybe Mary Jane should take solace in the fact that she is not the only one struggling in the relationship realm. In fact, much of last night’s episode was an instruction guide on what not to do.

At the start of the episode, Mary Jane battles with her private desires for marriage (or something like it) and the reality that her situation is anything but a fairytale. She rejects Andre’s proposal in a hotel room love nest, but gazes wistfully at the engagement ring he mailed to her to convince her to reconsider. In a laugh-out-loud scene, she mimics a trained seal when questioning whether or not women are trained to think, GIVE ME MARRIAGE. She tells her friend and colleague Mark (Aaron D. Spears) that marriage may not be in her future, but does she believe that?

“Being Mary Jane” Season 1/Episode 1 Recap

Last summer, BET teased us with the pilot episode of Being Mary Jane, which they debuted as an original movie. Mara Brock Akil’s creation proved to be captivating. Gabrielle Union embodied the lead character, Mary Jane Paul, an accomplished news anchor who cannot handle her love life and family with the same level of success as her career.

The show was full of memorable characters, compelling storylines, and spicy dialogue and scenes. The film even ended with Mary Jane freezing an unknowing man’s sperm. You can’t get much more drama than that (am I right??), which made the 5-month wait for the show’s official premiere that much harder to bear.

Celebrating FindSpark’s Three-Year Anniversary and Relaunch

5 Dec

If you are a young creative professional or student and have not heard of FindSpark (previously known as NY Creative Interns), get your life in order.

After graduating from college, FindSpark Founder and President Emily Miethner had a difficult time networking in the big city. She noticed that her friends and peers were also struggling to make connections with people in creative professions, so an idea was born. In December 2010, Miethner and her friend and fellow Hofstra alum Reb Carlson launched the Meetup group NY Creative Interns to serve as a haven for young creatives looking to meet likeminded peers and mentors and gain invaluable career advice.

Three years later, NY Creative Interns has relaunched as FindSpark and is the largest Meetup group for interns and recent grads in the country. The group offers a wide variety of events and live and virtual workshops with an array of speakers and mentors, a highly curated job board and insightful career-related articles.
